Update 2007 (August 8): Extinction.

A summary of the results of the baiji.org Foundation survey is reported in an article at CNN.com. The official status of the baiji is described as “critically endangered and possibly extinct,” but the opinion of Samuel Turvey, a conservation biologist at the Zoological Society of London, is that “there is little chance any remaining baiji are alive.”

Update 2007 (August 29): Extinction?

Hot on the heels of the official report of the baiji's demise comes a reported sighting of a live baiji in Anhui province. Unfortunately, one live baiji (the first reported sighting since 2004) is far from the minimum of 50 animals that would be needed to maintain a healthy, long-term-viable population. In addition, the identification of the sighted animal as a baiji is still uncertain.
